Ways to Celebrate Fall With Children

There are many things that you can do with your kids to welcome the new season. It is a fun time to show your kids what the fall season has to offer. There are so many fun things that your kids can experience when it’s fall.

You do not need to plan an elaborate celebration. A short walk outside, a simple craft, or a favorite fall snack can turn the first day of fall into a fun family tradition.

Here are some ideas for your kids, whether you’re spending time in Silver Spring or just outside your backyard.

Nature Walk

A great way to start off the first day of fall is to go outside and observe the season change.

Take your kids on a nature walk and see if they can spot any differences in the fall season. Here are some things that they can look for.

  • Changing leaves
  • Acorns
  • It’s colder
  • Listen to the sounds outside
  • Look for birds and squirrels
  • Are there different flowers or plants

You can even make it into a scavenger hunt and see what your kids can find. Give your child a small list of things to find or let them choose what they want to look for.

Families in Silver Spring can enjoy these activities on a neighborhood walk or at a nearby outdoor space. You do not need a long hike or special equipment to make the first day of fall feel different from an ordinary day.

Craft

Once you have found some beautiful fall leaves, you can use them to make a craft with your kids.

Children can arrange leaves on a piece of paper to create a fall collage. They can make a tree, an animal, a person, or an entirely imaginary picture.

Another idea is to give your kids some crayons and paper. Have them make leaf rubbings. Put a leaf under the paper and rub the side of your crayon on top of the paper. You will start to see the image of the leaf.

Make a Fall Bucket List

The first day of fall is also a great time to make a family fall bucket list.

Have everyone think of a couple of things that they want to do this fall. Have your kids help you make the list. They can write down the items or draw a picture for each thing.

Some things you can put on your fall bucket list.

  • Go to a pumpkin patch
  • Apple picking
  • Make something with apples
  • Leaf jumping
  • Read fall books
  • Family movie night
  • Enjoy a cup of apple cider.

This can become another family tradition that you do each fall.

Bake a Fall Treat Together

Of course, you always have to eat something to celebrate the first day of fall. Make something sweet with your kids this fall. Whether it’s apple muffins, pumpkin bread, or any other recipe.

Your kids can help you cook by measuring ingredients and putting toppings on whatever you are cooking. Let them help pick the recipe and gather ingredients.
