Teach your child what happens when colors are mixed together.
Have your child pick two colors and mix them together. Use paint that will wash off or watercolors. You can even use food coloring with water to mix colors.
Ask your child questions like:
They don’t have to get the correct color. It’s just fun to learn with your child.
Help your child clean up by putting all of the toys that are the same color together.
Pick a few toys that are different colors and have your child put them together. You can do this with all of the colors that they know.
Once your child has done this, mix them back up and play again. You can always play this game with your child while they are cleaning up. They can find one color that you tell them. There are so many colors they can play with at home.
Pick a color and let your child draw with that color.
Use that color with crayons, paint, markers, and paper. You can pick any color. One day draw with blue and the next day draw with yellow.
You can also let your child create a rainbow. Have them draw or cut paper and make their own rainbow. They can do it however they please.
It’s not what they end up with that matters. It allows them to play and learn about colors.

MCCA is the oldest nonprofit licensed child care provider in Montgomery County and started its work in 1968 as a Community Action Project of the War on Poverty. Recognizing the need for quality child care programs in their neighborhoods, a group of local activists formed an association to establish centers in Montgomery County that would serve a diverse population and establish high standards for child care. Now, more than 50 years later, MCCA’s dedicated and expertly trained staff continue their tradition of providing high quality child care and play-based education for children.
Families with school aged children who can afford their child care expenses during the school year often struggle to afford the all-day programs they need when school is out for the summer. The Richard Krampf Summer Adventures Scholarship Fund was established to help provide children a safe and stimulating place to spend their weeks when school is out. Please contact an MCCA Director for details on how to apply.
