Encouraging reading in children is important, especially when kids see books as a chore rather than a fun activity. Developing a love of reading early sets the foundation for lifelong learning, strong literacy skills, and curiosity about the world. With simple strategies, parents can help children enjoy books at home, during family time, or even while attending school in Silver Spring.
Let children pick the books they want to read. Choice empowers them and makes reading feel like an exciting activity rather than an assignment. Options can include:
Allowing children to select stories helps them connect personally with reading, building intrinsic motivation and confidence. Families in Silver Spring have found that giving children a selection of books at home or in early learning programs boosts engagement significantly.
Books don’t have to be confined to bedtime. Reading can happen naturally throughout the day. Consistent routines make reading predictable and comforting, especially during busy seasons:
Morning storytime: A quiet five minutes with a favorite book before school or breakfast.
Cozy reading corner: A small space with pillows and soft lighting encourages independent reading.
On-the-go stories: Short books in the car or while waiting for appointments turn idle time into literacy moments.
Seasonal or holiday books: Pair reading with crafts or snacks related to the story. For example, a winter-themed story can inspire a simple craft or a cozy snack.
Storytelling games: Encourage children to retell stories in their own words or create alternative endings. This strengthens comprehension and imagination. You can find more playful storytelling ideas in Storytelling Activities for Preschoolers.
Screen-free alternatives: Audiobooks can supplement reading while keeping children engaged without screens.
Encourage children to try, explore, and enjoy stories rather than just finishing a book. Praise their curiosity, participation, and creativity. Small celebrations, like showing a favorite drawing from the story or discussing a character’s choices, reinforce positive reading habits.
This is one of many strategies educators at Silver Spring schools use to encourage reading in children.

Books become even more meaningful when children see the story in their world:
Encouraging reading in children doesn’t require perfect strategies, just consistent, playful engagement and opportunities for exploration. By making reading interactive, providing choices, connecting stories to real life, and celebrating effort, parents can nurture confident, curious readers. When children enjoy reading, they not only build early literacy skills but also develop focus, imagination, and a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.

MCCA has been recognized by the Maryland State Legislature for its commitment to Montgomery County issued a quality programs and special needs child care Proclamation in 2016 to MCCA for its commitment to Montgomery County child care for more than 50 years. MCCA was also selected as a 2018 nonprofit finalist for a MOXIE Award for boldness and innovation
MCCA is the oldest nonprofit licensed child care provider in Montgomery County and started its work in 1968 as a Community Action Project of the War on Poverty. Recognizing the need for quality child care programs in their neighborhoods, a group of local activists formed an association to establish centers in Montgomery County that would serve a diverse population and establish high standards for child care. Now, more than 50 years later, MCCA’s dedicated and expertly trained staff continue their tradition of providing high quality child care and play-based education for children.
Families with school aged children who can afford their child care expenses during the school year often struggle to afford the all-day programs they need when school is out for the summer. The Richard Krampf Summer Adventures Scholarship Fund was established to help provide children a safe and stimulating place to spend their weeks when school is out. Please contact an MCCA Director for details on how to apply.
