Sunny days mean more time outdoors, running, climbing, and discovering the world. But with all that fun comes the need for thoughtful sun protection. Whether your child is playing at a preschool in Olney or enjoying family time at the park, keeping their skin safe is key to healthy summer fun.
Children’s skin is more sensitive than adults’, making it more vulnerable to sunburn. Just a few serious sunburns can increase the risk of skin issues later in life. Protecting little ones early sets the tone for safe, sun-smart habits that can last a lifetime.
Look for broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Mineral-based options with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are gentle and less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Be sure to apply it generously 15–30 minutes before sun exposure and don’t forget often-missed spots like ears, necks, and tops of feet.
At outdoor-friendly learning environments like this Olney location, families are often reminded to send children with sunscreen already applied for morning play.
Start with kid-friendly gear! Choose lightweight, breathable hats with a brim and adjustable fit. Let your child help pick out sunglasses with UV protection; something they’re more likely to wear if they love how it looks. Practice wearing hats and shades at home so it becomes part of their routine.
The sun is strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM. If possible, aim for outdoor play in the early morning or late afternoon. When that’s not realistic, prioritize shaded areas or create your own with umbrellas, pop-up tents, or a simple blanket over a clothesline.
Yes! Lightweight, tightly woven fabrics in long sleeves or pants offer an extra layer of sun protection. Many brands now offer UPF-rated clothing designed to block harmful rays while keeping kids cool and comfy. Look for moisture-wicking, breathable materials, especially on long play days.
Reapply every two hours or more often if your child is sweating or playing in water. If they’re enrolled in a full-day program, talk with the staff about sunscreen policies and whether you can provide a labeled bottle for reapplication.
Building a strong sun safety routine during early childhood sets kids up for lifelong healthy habits. From choosing the right sunscreen to dressing for protection, these small actions go a long way in keeping children safe during all their outdoor adventures.

MCCA has been recognized by the Maryland State Legislature for its commitment to Montgomery County issued a quality programs and special needs child care Proclamation in 2016 to MCCA for its commitment to Montgomery County child care for more than 50 years. MCCA was also selected as a 2018 nonprofit finalist for a MOXIE Award for boldness and innovation
MCCA is the oldest nonprofit licensed child care provider in Montgomery County and started its work in 1968 as a Community Action Project of the War on Poverty. Recognizing the need for quality child care programs in their neighborhoods, a group of local activists formed an association to establish centers in Montgomery County that would serve a diverse population and establish high standards for child care. Now, more than 50 years later, MCCA’s dedicated and expertly trained staff continue their tradition of providing high quality child care and play-based education for children.
Families with school aged children who can afford their child care expenses during the school year often struggle to afford the all-day programs they need when school is out for the summer. The Richard Krampf Summer Adventures Scholarship Fund was established to help provide children a safe and stimulating place to spend their weeks when school is out. Please contact an MCCA Director for details on how to apply.
