Knowing the right questions to ask a childcare center in Maryland before enrolling your child helps parents ensure a safe, nurturing, and well-regulated environment. Choosing the right child-care center is one of the most important decisions families can make. From safety and daily routines to staff qualifications and communication practices, asking the right questions ensures parents find a program that aligns with their values and meets their child’s needs.
Every licensed child-care center in Maryland must follow regulations, such as posting licenses, maintaining staff-to-child ratios, and ensuring safe facilities. But beyond compliance, parents want reassurance that the center’s policies, routines, and philosophy fit their family. Knowing the key questions to ask a childcare center provides peace of mind and clarity on what to expect.
At our locations, such as our Potomac preschool, parents are encouraged to ask any of these questions during tours, ensuring they have a clear understanding of daily routines, staff, and policies.

These questions to ask a childcare center go beyond basics, giving families insight into the center’s culture, priorities, and day-to-day operations.
Many parents find it helpful to create a checklist to bring on tours, ensuring they don’t forget important topics. A checklist can include:
Parents in Potomac often find that using a checklist simplifies the decision-making process, especially when comparing multiple childcare centers.
For additional guidance, families can access on our website, the Maryland State Department of Education’s pamphlet, Parent’s Guide to Regulated/Licensed Child Care, which outlines parent rights, provider responsibilities, and key rules for licensed programs.
Asking the right questions is only the first step. Building a strong partnership with staff is equally important. Parents should feel comfortable reviewing a center’s public licensing file and discussing concerns directly with teachers or administrators. Open communication ensures consistency between home and school, supporting a child’s emotional and social development.
Parents frequently report that childcare centers who are open to ongoing questions, such as our Potomac location, build trust and collaboration, helping children transition smoothly and thrive.

MCCA is the oldest nonprofit licensed child care provider in Montgomery County and started its work in 1968 as a Community Action Project of the War on Poverty. Recognizing the need for quality child care programs in their neighborhoods, a group of local activists formed an association to establish centers in Montgomery County that would serve a diverse population and establish high standards for child care. Now, more than 50 years later, MCCA’s dedicated and expertly trained staff continue their tradition of providing high quality child care and play-based education for children.
Families with school aged children who can afford their child care expenses during the school year often struggle to afford the all-day programs they need when school is out for the summer. The Richard Krampf Summer Adventures Scholarship Fund was established to help provide children a safe and stimulating place to spend their weeks when school is out. Please contact an MCCA Director for details on how to apply.
